Budget and Fiscal Services
A budget is the instrument which sets forth a financial plan for the achievement of the goals and objectives of the school district for the upcoming year. It is also the community’s educational plan expressed in dollars. It is required to be formally adopted by the Board of Directors each year and a copy submitted to the state. The budget covers the school fiscal year which is September 1 through August 31 of the following calendar year. It establishes maximum expenditure amounts for each fund and provides a means of measuring and guiding performance.
The 2008-09 budget is driven by five belief statements set by the school board. These beliefs are listed below:
- We believe in a school system where no child is expendable. Every student, without exception, has the potential for growth, improvement, and success in life.
- We believe all students, given the right environment, will learn and excel when provided with authentically engaging work based on high standards.
- We believe that students are our priority and decisions must be made on the basis of what is best for each child.
- We believe that a world-competitive school system is dependent on utilizing the unique talents and perspective of staff, families, and community members.
- We believe all students, given the right environment and unwavering guidance, will develop the skills needed to face moral and ethical life challenges with integrity, honesty, and self-respect.
Approximately 74 percent of the school district's total revenues are provided by the state legislature. An additional 8 percent comes from the federal government and 3 percent from other miscellaneous sources. The remaining 15 percent of the school district's revenues come from the locally voted Replacement Levy. The Replacement Levy fills the gap between what the state funds and what it actually costs to provide the current quality education we offer our students.
Our desire is to be open and honest, and to be held accountable regarding the fiscal operation of the Evergreen School District. This is a specific and ongoing effort for our school district.
