Cyber Safety

While the internet has many benefits for families, there are also risks. To reduce these risks, parents should be knowledgeable about online dangers, establish and follow clear guidelines, and be continually attentive to their child's use of the Internet.

Reduce the Cyber Risks

  • Build a climate of trust regarding the use of the Internet. Make Internet use a family activity; share the joy of discovering new online resources. Respect a child's online privacy, especially as they mature.
  • Place the computer at a location that is readily visible.
  • Become and Internet user.
  • Share the Internet with a son or daughter, perhaps by using the same email address.
  • Install a filtering software or an Internet rating system to limit the sites that children can visit.
  • Periodically check the "history" file on the Internet browser page listing all the sites the child has visited.
  • Never give out identifying information. On the Internet, nothing is private.
  • Never allow a child to use the computer to arrange a face-to-face meeting with another computer user without first getting parental permission.
  • Do not reply to message or bulletin boards that are suggestive or threatening.
  • Do not click on links contained in emails from persons not known to the family. Such links can introduce computer viruses or connect the user to inappropriate sites.
  • Cooperatively develop computer and Internet guidelines which the child agrees to follow at all times. It is recommended that these family rules be attached to the computer or posted near the immediate work area.

Safe and Drug Free Schools

Evergreen Public Schools annually applies for federal funds to participate in the Safe and Drug Free Schools program. These funds help support an Intervention Specialist to assist students with issues related to safety, drugs and alcohol. You can reach an Intervention Specialist by calling the main office at your child's school.
